Human Rights

Human rights are not only international law but a matter of faith. Thus, ethical issues concerning rights require a concern for the law as well as (for Christians) an understanding of the biblical imperatives of Christian faith.

International human rights law has changed the way we think about ethics.  Since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved without dissenting vote by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948, the International Covenants of Civil and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have been ratified and come into force.

A book by Robert Traer showing support in religious traditions for human rights law was published in 1991 as Faith in Human Rights: Support in Religious Traditions for a Global Struggle. This study includes chapters on statements by the World Council of Churches, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and Evangelical arguments for human rights, as well as material on Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim support for human rights.

The following essays on human rights were written between 1991 and 1999.  Although not explicitly biblical, they reflect the theology and ethics that are grounded in my study of the Christian Bible.

Faith in Human Rights

Religious Freedom

Religious Freedom: Also a Community Right
