Photos from Palestine

The Roman Catholic priest in Taybeh, a Christian village to the east of Ramallah.  The church has organized a lamp cooperative, which employs villagers in making both the pottery lamp and the olive oil that burns within the lamp.

Here is a Taybeh lamp with a barely lit wick.

This church ruin at the edge of Taybeh dates back to the Crusader era (1099-1187).

Villagers come to the remains of this Crusader church and sacrifice animals, as part of their prayer.  The hand marks on the walls are bloody prints.

This plaque above the front door of a Christian home in Beit Jala, which is just west of Bethlehem, depicts St. George killing a dragon.  St. George is very popular here, perhaps because he was seen as a protector of the Crusaders, who are remember by local Christians as heroes.

Olive tree pruning with a Palestinian family and volunteers sent to this area of the West Bank by Rabbis for Human Rights to help offer protection from settlers living in an outpost just up the hill.  The man on the left is a philosophy graduate student from Hebrew University.  The woman in the center is an American graduate student, and the man at the right is one of the Palestinian landowners.

Palestinian women gathered firewood while we pruned olive trees.  Here two of the women are carrying bundles of sticks down to the tractor.

This is the Jerusalem Candle of Hope that Israeli and Palestinian women are making under the auspices of the Parents Circle - Families Forum.

Bishop Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jerusalem.

The back of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.  Note the porch extensions built out from the walls, and also the satellite dishes and solar water heaters along the roof.
